Welcome to Year 5

Welcome to Year 5! We are really looking forward to a happy, busy and successful year of learning together. Our class teacher is Miss Mabbett, and we are very fortunate to be supported by our teaching assistants, Miss Riordan and Miss Robini. Together, we will be working closely to ensure that all children feel safe, supported and encouraged to do their very best throughout the year.

Our topic this term is Power. Through this topic, children will explore how people and countries have been ruled throughout history. We will be learning about kings and queens, democracy, timelines and conquest, as well as the role of religion in ruling societies. Children will also learn about the Senedd and discover who helps to make decisions in Wales today. This topic will encourage children to think about leadership, fairness and how power has changed over time.

Reading is an important part of Year 5, and children are expected to bring their reading books into school every Wednesday. We will be focusing on developing strong reading behaviours, including fluency, comprehension and the ability to talk thoughtfully about what they have read. Spellings will be given out each Monday and tested on Fridays to support children in building accuracy and confidence in their writing.

In Literacy lessons, we will be concentrating on spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as developing sentence structure and writing skills across a range of text types. In Maths, children will be learning about the four operations, area and perimeter and shape as well as helping them to build strong problem-solving skills and mathematical understanding.

PE lessons take place on Fridays, so children will need to bring appropriate PE clothes to change into on that day. We also encourage children to continue their learning at home using online resources such as Reading Eggs, TT Rockstars and Nessy, which provide fun and engaging ways to practise key skills.
