  • Healthy Schools Scheme

    Fri 17 May 2019

We are part of the Welsh Network of Healthy School Schemes (WNHSS).

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognises the WNHSS as playing a key role in promoting the health of children and young people, and the scheme has been rolled out across Wales since 2000.

Each local scheme is responsible for supporting the development of health promoting schools within their area. The WNHSS describes a health promoting school as one which ‘actively promotes, protects and embeds the physical, mental and social health and well being of its community through positive action’. This can be achieved through policy, strategic planning, staff development, curriculum, ethos, physical environment and community relations.

Within the scheme, there are seven different health topics that schools need to address. These include:

    • Food and Fitness
    • Mental and Emotional Health and Well Being
    • Personal Development and Relationships
    • Substance Use and Misuse
    • Environment
    • Safety
    • Hygiene

As a school, we are currently working towards completing our Level 6 award.  If you would like to know any more about this, please do come and speak to Mrs Meredith.

  • Schools - New Welsh Empathy Education Project

    Mon 01 Apr 2019

Our cluster is embarking on a new Empathy Explorers programme to help the children develop their empathy skills. The programme is led by Empathy Lab, the first organisation to build children’s empathy, literacy and social activism through the use of high quality literature. Its strategy builds on new scientific evidence showing the power of reading to build real-life empathy skills. www.empathylab.uk; @EmpathyLab.UK

The work has been made possible by a Future Ready Fund grant to Empathy Lab from Nesta, the innovation foundation https://www.nesta.org.uk/blog/future-ready-fund-winners/. The grant will help Empathy Lab introduce its programme to our 8 cluster schools working in partnership with ERW.

Empathy Lab will work with each school to create a bespoke plan to deliver the project, against the backdrop of the new Welsh Curriculum and in particular the Health and Well-Being AoLE. Students will learn about the meaning and science of empathy, and through year round lessons develop a deeper understanding of other people, through the creative use of literature and social action work.

  • Upsetting Images / Characters Online - Information for Parents

    Tue 05 Mar 2019

Over the past few weeks, there has been an increasing number of stories on the news and online regarding unpleasant images / characters that are supposedly 'hijacking' the internet, as our children are using it.

We have done a bit of research and think that there is nothing to worry about.  However, for more information on how to keep your child safe online and to hopefully put your mind at ease, take a look at the links below:
